My Style (Why I Redesigned This Website)
Over the past couple days, I've taken it upon myself to redesign this website. I'm going to try to be intentional about keeping it updated and consistent. I might even try to post some things on this blog on a semi-regular basis.
Here's the main reason I wanted to update:
I'm finally starting to move past some of my design crutches that I've been maintaining for years.
I had a lot of chances to do design for people in high school and early in college, but I have come to realize how much those opportunities inadvertently made my design worse. I had such a production mindset that I would just try to get things done as quickly as I possibly could. Yes, I wanted things to be good, but what mattered more was that they were done. I started to hear this a lot:
"I saw that and knew you had created it."
For awhile I saw that as a compliment. "Oh, people just know my style! That's awesome!" But as I progressed in my opinions on design, I realized that I didn't just have a style, I was actively preventing myself from expanding into new areas of design. I just wasn't learning.
So, my old website design was of a very specific style. It was MY style. But, I'm leaving that behind. Not that I was terrible at design, but I could certainly be better. I think this new website design is better. It makes it more about my work and less about my style. And I think that's a good thing.
Here's to a future of broadening my work into new horizons.
